It's Summer Camp For Educators!
June 21st--June 23rd 2024

During this three day two night camp experience, educators will learn how to engage students in all sorts of outdoor activities. 

Topics include: 

  • How to Herd Your Squirrels

  • Phenomena-based Outdoor Education Activities

  • How to Teach Nature Journaling

  • Garden Education For All

  • Project Based Learning with Citizen Science

  • Resources Roundtable and Planning Party

Syllabus and Schedule

Staying at Big Lagoon

Our school campus is located just north of Sue-meg State Park, one of the most scenic places in California. 

​

Glamping accommodations will be provided, though you are welcome to bring your own tents. You will be sleeping amidst fog-draped Sitka Spruce trees while the sound of the ocean sings you to sleep in our campus meadow. 

​

Seven meals will be provided by our acclaimed kitchen staff during your stay. You must provide your own snacks and preferred evening beverages for the campfire programs and social hour. 

​

Pay showers are located adjacent to the campus at Big Lagoon County Park or Sue-meg State Park. 

​

Please be prepared to hike up to 6 miles in a day through varied terrain.

About

Your Facilitators

Ian Gledhill is the Environmental Educator for Big Lagoon Union Elementary. He has been teaching outside for over 20 years. In his career, Ian has worked all over California as a naturalist, and as far away as Yellowstone National Park as an interpretive ranger. Ian received his elementary and science teaching credentials in 2011 and has experience teaching all grades from Kindergarten to High School. Ian is a LifeLab certified garden educator and AEOE certified environmental educator. In 2016 Ian received AEOE's Environmental Educator of the Year award and he can't wait to share what he's learned in the field and gain knowledge from all who attend.

Haley Davis teaches art through various platforms and organizations, including work as a teaching artist for the County Office of Education in initiatives geared towards arts integration and social emotional learning through the arts. They also taught in local schools through Playhouse Arts in an Artist in Schools program funded by the California Arts Council, focusing on Mask Making and Shadow Puppetry. Additionally, Haley taught fine art classes at the Morris Graves Museum and served as the Education Coordinator at S.C.R.A.P. Humboldt. They believe in dynamic art education to foster empathy, innovation, and creativity and hold degrees in Fine Art from South Lake Tahoe Community College and Humboldt State University's Art Education Program. Education, natural resources, and social justice were integral to their art practice.
